Former President of Suriname, Santokhi, passed away at the age of 67, according to local media reports. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Santokhi served as President from 2020 to 2025 and led the Progressive Reform Party. He earlier held the position of justice minister, earning recognition for his leadership.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Santokhi’s deep affinity for Indian culture, noting that his oath-taking in Sanskrit had resonated widely and symbolised strong cultural ties.
Born in Lelydorp in Suriname’s Wanica district, Santokhi hailed from an Indo-Surinamese Hindu family with roots tracing back to Indian indentured labourers from Bihar. His early career in law enforcement earned him the nickname ‘Sheriff’.
As a leader of Indian origin, Santokhi strengthened ties between India and Suriname across trade, energy, and cultural sectors. He received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman and attended Pravasi Bharatiya Divas as the chief guest.
The Prime Minister extended condolences to Santokhi’s family and the people of Suriname, noting that his legacy of leadership, service, and cultural connection will continue to inspire future generations.
