PM Modi Meets Political Leaders Across Party Lines In Maldives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a multi-party meeting with senior political leaders of the Maldives on Saturday.

He emphasised that the involvement of representatives from across the political spectrum underscores bipartisan support for the longstanding, time-tested friendship between the two nations.

Key Indian dignitaries present with him included External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and other senior officials.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Had a meaningful meeting with members of different political parties of the Maldives. The participation of leaders across the political spectrum underscores the bipartisan support for the strong and time-tested India-Maldives friendship. Our shared values continue to guide this important partnership.”

Earlier in the day, PM Modi had met with former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives through capacity building and developmental cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi acknowledged Nasheed as a strong advocate of deeper India–Maldives ties.

He also engaged with People’s Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, praising the formation of the India–Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Majlis as a welcome step in strengthening parliamentary partnerships.

Collaborating With the Vice President

PM Modi met the Vice President of the Maldives, Mohamed Latheef, to discuss the key pillars of mutual cooperation: infrastructure, technology, climate action, energy, and more.

Prime Minister Modi noted that both countries continue to collaborate closely in these sectors for the benefit of their populations.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Had a very good meeting with Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef. Our discussion touched upon key pillars of the India-Maldives friendship. Our nations continue to work closely in sectors like infrastructure, technology, climate change, energy and more. This is greatly beneficial to our people. We look forward to deepening this partnership in the years to come.”

Continuing Strong State Visit Diplomacy

PM Modi’s two‑day state visit to the Maldives—his third and the first by an Indian Head of State or Government during President Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure—began on Friday following his UK visit.

The visit reaffirmed India–Maldives cooperation with the exchange of multiple agreements across sectors.

Among the highlights were:

  • Commemorative stamps marking 60 years of diplomatic relations
  • Virtual inauguration of road and drainage systems in Addu City
  • Launching six High Impact Community Development Projects
  • Handing over 3,300 social housing units and 72 vehicles to the Maldives authorities

These engagements and gestures also reflect India’s broader ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the Mahasagar vision, reinforcing shared strategic values and a long-term commitment to partnership.

PM Modi’s meetings with diverse Maldivian leaders today further solidify the foundation of bipartisan goodwill that underpins India–Maldives relations.
