Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, in Melbourne on Thursday and discussed the growing India-Australia partnership, with a focus on bilateral cooperation and people-to-people ties.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders exchanged views on the enduring relationship between the two countries, built on shared democratic values, strong people-to-people connections and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
PM Modi also expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the third Australia-India Annual Summit held with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi and Albanese participated in the third Australia-India Annual Summit, where they reviewed progress across trade and investment, critical minerals, clean energy, technology, defence and security, education, skills, mobility, science and innovation, culture, sports and people-to-people ties.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, inclusive and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
Following the summit, both Prime Ministers adopted the India-Australia Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation.
According to the MEA, the declaration provides a comprehensive framework for enhanced cooperation in defence, maritime domain awareness, counter-terrorism, combating transnational organised crime, critical minerals, defence industry partnerships, defence personnel exchanges and regional security.
The summit also concluded with the signing of several MoUs covering defence, maritime security, energy, including nuclear energy, critical technology, education and skill development.
PM Modi and Albanese later addressed leading business leaders from both countries at the India-Australia CEO Forum in Melbourne.
