India-Australia Meetings Are Like Cricket, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised the growing India-Australia relationship, using cricket comparisons to illustrate the strength and longevity of bilateral ties.

Sharing his remarks on X, PM Modi said India-Australia meetings resemble cricket, with focused agendas like One-Day Internationals, swift decisions like T20 matches and a partnership as enduring and deep as a Test match.

PM Modi said he held extensive discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne.

In his X statement, Prime Minister Modi said both countries agreed to accelerate work on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). He noted that the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2022, has steadily expanded cooperation across multiple sectors.

The Prime Minister said both leaders reviewed ways to strengthen trade and investment ties. He added that the proposed CECA would remain balanced, ambitious and mutually beneficial for both nations.

PM Modi also described the summit outcomes as unprecedented, highlighting progress in renewable energy, climate action, nuclear energy, critical minerals, technology and education.

In another X statement, PM Modi said both countries issued an important declaration to deepen defence and security cooperation. He added that India and Australia also agreed to work closely on shipbuilding, ship repair and maintenance.

Earlier, PM Modi and Anthony Albanese held the third Australia-India Annual Leaders’ Summit in Melbourne.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and senior officials attended the discussions.

The Prime Minister also received a ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honour at Government House, Victoria.

Later, both leaders participated in the India-Australia CEO Forum, where they addressed leading business representatives from both countries.
