Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister attended the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO in Tianjin.

The gathering focused on issues such as the organisation’s development roadmap, reforms in global governance, security challenges, counter-terrorism, economic growth, financial cooperation and sustainability.

On the sidelines of the Summit, PM Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss strengthening ties across multiple sectors, including defence, space, trade, culture, and security.

During his address at the Summit, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s three guiding principles for engagement with the SCO:

  • Security,
  • Connectivity, and
  • Opportunity

Stressing that peace and stability are essential for growth, he urged members to take firm action against terrorism, including cutting terror financing and tackling radicalisation.

Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, he thanked the SCO nations for their support and called for united action against countries promoting cross-border terrorism.

The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of connectivity for trust-building and development, highlighting India’s backing for projects like Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor.

He spoke about promoting cooperation in areas such as innovation, youth initiatives, start-ups, and cultural heritage, while proposing the launch of a Civilisational Dialogue Forum to enhance people-to-people exchanges.

Expressing India’s support for the SCO’s reform agenda, PM Modi welcomed initiatives to tackle organised crime, drug trafficking and cyber threats.

He also urged the grouping to push for reforms in global institutions, including the United Nations.

The Prime Minister thanked Xi Jinping for the hospitality shown during the visit and congratulated China on successfully hosting the summit. He also extended good wishes to Kyrgyzstan, which will chair the SCO next year.

The meeting concluded with member states adopting the Tianjin Declaration.
