Amit Shah Assesses Flood Damage At Tawi Bridge & Bikram Chowk In Jammu

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday visited two of Jammu city’s most flood-affected sites—Tawi Bridge and Bikram Chowk—to assess the extent of damage caused by recent heavy rainfall, cloudbursts, and landslides.

His visit formed part of a wider flood response mission across Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring states.

HM Shah was accompanied by J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, and senior officials as he inspected structural damage to the Tawi Bridge and surrounding areas.

The bridge, a critical part of the city’s infrastructure, sustained significant damage due to floodwaters.

At Bikram Chowk, another low-lying area affected by the deluge, HM Shah interacted with emergency personnel and civic authorities to understand the challenges in ongoing relief and restoration work.

Aerial Survey of Severely Hit Regions

Later in the day, the Home Minister planned to conduct an aerial survey of Kishtwar district and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine route, where cloudbursts and landslides on 14 and 26 August caused substantial loss of life and property.

His aerial reconnaissance aims to guide the next phase of the Centre’s coordinated disaster response in Jammu and Kashmir.

On Sunday, prior to his visit, Shah had announced the formation of Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab to assess damage and oversee relief operations following extreme weather events across northern India.

The IMCTs will conduct spot assessments and evaluate relief measures undertaken by state and union territory governments.

The Home Ministry stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Central government is working in close coordination with affected states, offering logistical assistance and rapid deployment of NDRF teams, Army units, and Air Force helicopters for search, rescue, and essential service restoration.

Top Officials Join Relief Coordination

Senior figures such as Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Director of the Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, DG BSF Daljit Singh Chaudhary, along with officials from NHAI, IMD, and various security agencies, also arrived in Jammu to support the Home Minister’s review and ensure swift implementation of recovery plans.

Shah is also expected to review flood-related damage to fencing and border outposts along the International Border with Pakistan, where high water levels have disrupted security and infrastructure.

In a display of solidarity, the Home Minister is likely to visit flood-affected localities in Jammu and meet families impacted by the disaster, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to support the region’s recovery and resilience.

These efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to disaster management, combining infrastructure assessment, community engagement, and proactive policy response.
