Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten held wide-ranging bilateral talks in The Hague on Saturday, discussing the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on global energy prices, while agreeing to elevate India-Netherlands ties to a Strategic Partnership.
During the discussions at the Catshuis, the official residence of the Dutch Prime Minister, both leaders stressed the importance of restoring peace and stability in the region.
Rob Jetten stated that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz had significantly affected energy prices globally, impacting both India and the Netherlands. He underlined the need for a lasting solution to the conflict.
The two leaders also discussed defence and security cooperation, with Prime Minister Modi highlighting the possibility of developing an action plan for collaboration in the defence industry. He noted that both countries could further strengthen cooperation in sectors such as maritime security, maritime systems and space technology.
Economic ties remained a major focus of the talks. PM Modi emphasised that the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement would create major opportunities for both countries.
The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in fintech, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, green hydrogen and critical minerals.
Prime Minister Jetten described India as a trusted partner sharing democratic values and welcomed new agreements in healthcare, water management, technology and innovation.
A key highlight was the MoU between Tata Electronics and ASML to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem in Dholera, Gujarat.
The two leaders also discussed cooperation in renewable energy, education and culture, including the return of the 11th-century Chola plates.
India and the Netherlands signed 14 agreements and adopted a Strategic Partnership Roadmap for 2026-2030, while PM Modi invited Jetten to visit India.
