Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Tianjin, China, on Saturday afternoon to attend the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, which kicks off on Sunday.
Having completed his Japan visit earlier in the day, PM Modi was warmly welcomed upon his arrival at the Binhai International Airport.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Landed in Tianjin, China. Looking forward to deliberations at the SCO Summit and meeting various world leaders.”
At the summit, PM Modi will likely hold crucial bilateral meetings with several world leaders.
Notably, he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
This will be the first meeting between PM Modi and President Xi since their discussions at the 2024 BRICS Summit in Russia. During the summit, both sides reached a breakthrough agreement on patrolling the 3,500-km Line of Actual Control (LAC). The agreement helped ease tensions from a four-year-long border standoff.
India has been a member of the SCO since 2017. It previously held the presidency of the Council of Heads of State during 2022-23.
In his pre-departure statement, PM Modi stated, “India is an active and constructive member of the SCO. During our Presidency, we have introduced new ideas and initiated collaboration in the fields of innovation, health and cultural exchanges. India remains committed to working with the SCO members to address shared challenges and deepen regional cooperation. I also look forward to meeting President Xi Jinping, President Putin and other leaders on the sidelines of the Summit.”
“I am confident that my visits to Japan and China would further our national interests and priorities, and contribute to building fruitful cooperation in advancing regional and global peace, security, and sustainable development,” he added.
The SCO, founded in 2001, includes China, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus as full members.
Afghanistan and Mongolia are observer states, while 14 countries, including Turkey, Sri Lanka, and Saudi Arabia, hold dialogue partner status.
