Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lauded a series of cultural performances in Jakarta that highlighted the deep civilisational, cultural and spiritual links between India and Indonesia during his three-day State Visit.
The Prime Minister praised Indonesia’s iconic shadow puppet tradition, Wayang Kulit, for bringing the timeless story of the Ramayana to life.
He also appreciated a Bharatanatyam performance by Indonesian students of the Samanvaya Group and commended a devotional Buddhist presentation, Homage to the Triple Gem, performed by artistes of the Vihara Dharma Ratna Group, saying it reflected the enduring teachings of Lord Buddha and the values of the Triple Gem.
PM Modi was welcomed by members of the Indian community at his hotel in Jakarta, where he was greeted with a cultural showcase featuring a Wayang Kulit rendition inspired by the Ramayana and Mahabharata, a Bharatanatyam performance of Shiva Stuthi, and a devotional Buddhist dance paying homage to the Tiratana.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the performances reflected the shared heritage of the two nations. The Prime Minister also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, who greeted him enthusiastically.
Visit Aims To Deepen Bilateral Ties
Earlier in the day, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto personally received PM Modi at Jakarta airport. The Prime Minister later said he was “deeply touched” by the warm welcome and expressed confidence that his discussions with President Subianto would further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2018.
PM Modi said the visit would enhance cooperation across sectors and deepen cultural ties, including a planned visit with President Subianto to the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta. Fighter jets of the Indonesian Air Force escorted the Prime Minister’s aircraft after it entered Indonesian airspace.
Indonesia is the first stop of PM Modi’s three-nation tour, which will also include Australia and New Zealand.
