Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Brazilian President Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on Saturday, reaffirming the growing momentum in the India–Brazil partnership.
PM Modi described the interaction as a delight, noting that both countries remain committed to expanding trade and cultural linkages for the benefit of their citizens.
The two leaders have held several high-level engagements this year, reflecting their shared determination to elevate bilateral relations.
The meeting comes months after PM Modi’s State Visit to Brazil, during which the country conferred its highest civilian honour, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, on the Indian Prime Minister.
That visit saw both nations agree on a comprehensive framework to deepen cooperation across sectors such as technology, defence, agriculture, health, and people-to-people ties.
PM Modi and Lula have consistently emphasised a ‘people-centric’ approach to partnership, positioning both nations as central pillars in promoting inclusive development within the Global South.
Their discussions in Johannesburg echoed these priorities, underscoring the strategic, economic and cultural synergies that continue to shape the bilateral agenda.
Shared Vision for the Global South
India and Brazil play influential roles in multilateral platforms, including BRICS, the G20 and the United Nations. Their alignment on global governance, climate action, food security and equitable development reinforces the wider significance of their partnership.
Lula, a long-standing advocate of South-South cooperation, has expressed interest in leveraging Brazil’s strengths in agriculture and technology to support mutual progress.
India, in turn, views Brazil as a valuable partner in diversifying energy sources, enhancing defence collaboration and expanding health initiatives.
Recent diplomatic engagements further reflect this trajectory. Last month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Celso Luis Nunes Amorim, Special Advisor to President Lula, in New Delhi to discuss strategic opportunities. Jaishankar described the meeting as a ‘useful exchange’ on global developments and avenues for deeper cooperation.
With both leaders reiterating their commitment in Johannesburg, India and Brazil appear set to take their strategic partnership to new heights.
Their collaboration carries implications far beyond bilateral ties, offering a unified voice on behalf of developing nations and strengthening collective efforts to address global challenges.
