According to a report in the Independent, Allegiant Airlines passengers and crew were injured horribly and left with “broken bones” after a flight from North Carolina to Florida experienced violent turbulence that many people compared to the flying scene in the film “The Matrix.”
There were 179 passengers on board as well as six crew members, four of whom suffered injuries. According to the source, on July 12, Allegiant Airlines Flight 227 departed from North Carolina and encountered “powerful turbulence” as it traveled to St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport in Florida. One flight attendant was injured during the event and was later thrown back to the plane’s floor.
A passenger who had entered the lavatory prior to the turbulence returned with blood “gushing” from her cranium.
The airline reported that the aircraft “landed normally and taxied to the gate under its own power”. Medical professionals were ready to treat the injured at the gate. The severity of the injuries suffered by the two passengers and two flight attendants who were brought to the hospital is still unknown.
A passenger named Lisa Spriggs described the event as “petrifying” and compared it to a scene from a sci-fi film. She claimed to have been pushed into the air while the flight attendant was standing next to her, according to CBS News. “After descending for more than halfway, we suddenly encountered some little turbulence, and the stewardess sitting next to us lost her footing.
She really shot up in the air—the only word that comes to mind to describe it is “Matrix—and was there for a split second before landing on her ankle and breaking it, according to Ms. Spriggs.
“Some lady was in the toilet during the turbulence,” a different passenger said to the media, “and she came out and sat down behind me with a huge laceration on her right eyebrow, gushing out blood.”
Allegiant Airlines claims that they are looking into the incident “in coordination” with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Contrarily, the NTSB told CBS News that it was “monitoring the situation” but had not yet opened an investigation.
