More than 60 Jamaican primary school children were hospitalized after consuming strong rainbow-colored cannabis sweets which caused them to vomit and hallucinate.
“I am confident that together we will strengthen our safety and security regime to combat the unconscionable sale of marijuana-infused products to children”, Fayval Williams said on Tuesday, noting the most unfortunate circumstances under which she met with Ocho Rios Primary School parents and stakeholders.
Late Monday, Williams uploaded an image she said was submitted to her ministry, showing a colorful packet of full-throttle rainbow sour belts, each carrying 100 milligrams of THC – a hefty dose for experienced individuals.
“One little boy said he only had one sweetie”, Williams continued, adding several of the school children were given intravenous drips to speed up recovery.
Williams went on to say, “That’s how potent this product is”.
In 2015, Jamaica legalized the possession of up to 2 ounces (57 grams) of marijuana for religious, therapeutic, and scientific uses, and established a licensing agency for the country’s legal medical cannabis business.
According to Radio Jamaica, the Ganja Growers and Producers Association of Jamaica is proposing a public education program for responsible adult consumption and preventing child consumption, as well as pressing for stricter packaging rules.
