Israel carried out a strike against Iran on Saturday, describing it as a preventive attack and naming the operation Operation Shield of Judah, just two days after the United States and Iran concluded a third round of talks in Geneva.
Israel’s defence minister confirmed the launch of the operation earlier in the day.
The United States also took part in the strikes, according to the Associated Press, which cited a US official.
Following the operation, the Israeli military issued a nationwide alert, activating sirens and urging residents to prepare for possible Iranian missile retaliation.
Authorities advised people to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions.
Israel also announced emergency civil restrictions, including the closure of schools and colleges, a ban on public gatherings, and advisories for people to work from home until further notice.
Multiple explosions were reported in Tehran. Local media and eyewitnesses reported hearing at least five blasts, including several in the city’s central areas.
Reports also claimed an attack near the president’s residence, though Iranian authorities have not confirmed this.
Iranian state media additionally reported explosions in the Sayyed Khandan area of northern Tehran.
Officials, however, have so far not issued any formal statement on the nature of the strikes or the extent of damage.
