Public Security Minister Pang Tu-sop of North Korea and Russia’s Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev held talks in Moscow on Tuesday, culminating in an agreement to strengthen cooperation on public safety and law enforcement, the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang reported on Saturday.
The Russian ministry highlighted key areas for collaboration, including combating transnational organised crime, tracking and arresting wanted criminals, responding to extremist and terrorist threats, and cracking down on human and drug trafficking.
Both sides also agreed to enhance cooperation in border areas.
North Korea and Russia aim to open a road bridge across the Tumen River next year, which they began constructing in April.
At a forum in Vladivostok on Friday, President Vladimir Putin confirmed plans to build new bridges with North Korea.
Officials noted that increased transportation and cross-border movement may require stronger measures to combat potential crimes, including smuggling.
North Korean Cultural Minister Sung Jong-gyu departed for Russia on Friday to attend a global cultural forum in Saint Petersburg, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Since signing a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in June last year, North Korea and Russia have expanded cooperation across military, economic, and cultural sectors.
Both nations view strengthened public safety collaboration as vital amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
