JP Nadda Gathers MPs In Delhi Ahead Of Vice-Presidential Election

BJP National President JP Nadda is scheduled to meet party MPs in Delhi on Saturday to strategise for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, slated for September 9.

The party has sent a formal invitation to all its MPs, requesting their presence in the national capital. As part of the preparations, Nadda will also host a dinner for the MPs.

Between Saturday and Monday, BJP MPs have a packed schedule.

On Sunday, they will attend a full-day workshop at the GMC Balayogi auditorium in Parliament, followed by another three-hour session on Monday.

That evening, NDA MPs will join Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a dinner meeting ahead of the election.

Candidates & Numbers

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate, while the INDIA Bloc has fielded former Supreme Court Judge B Sudershan Reddy.

Radhakrishnan enjoys a strong numerical advantage. The Lok Sabha has 543 MPs and the Rajya Sabha has 233 MPs in attendance.

The BJP controls 240 MPs in the Lower House and 102 MPs in the Upper House. With ally support, the NDA’s combined strength reaches 421 in the Lok Sabha and 128 in the Rajya Sabha.

The INDIA Bloc holds 235 Lok Sabha MPs and 77 Rajya Sabha MPs. Support from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could add 11 MPs, taking their tally to 325.

Additional backing from the YSR Congress Party, which contributes 11 MPs, further strengthens the NDA’s position, bringing total support for Radhakrishnan to 433 MPs, giving him a decisive lead.

The BJP has also appealed to opposition parties in Tamil Nadu to support Radhakrishnan, urging them to ‘correct their historic blunder’ from when they did not back Dr APJ Abdul Kalam during his second term as President.

With the NDA enjoying a clear numerical advantage, political observers expect the election outcome to favour CP Radhakrishnan, consolidating the alliance’s position in the Upper House.
