North Korea and Russia have opened their first cross-border road bridge over the Tumen River, marking a significant development in their increasingly close ties.
North Korean state media described the bridge as important infrastructure that could help revitalise cooperation between the two countries.
The opening ceremony took place in Rason, North Korea, and Khasan, Russia, with North Korean Premier Pak Thae-song and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin attending virtually.
The two countries began construction in April 2025, following a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang in June 2024.
KCNA said the bridge will boost cross-border travel, trade and tourism.
Pak called it a symbol of friendship, while Mishustin pledged continued Russian support.
Named after Soviet officer Yakov Novichenko, the bridge replaces the countries’ sole rail crossing and will strengthen connectivity.
The development comes as Moscow and Pyongyang have strengthened their strategic alignment, particularly since North Korea deployed troops to support Russia during its war against Ukraine.
The growing partnership has raised concerns among Western countries and South Korea that improved infrastructure could facilitate deeper military cooperation.
The new bridge is likely to strengthen trade and transport links while providing another avenue for closer economic and strategic engagement between North Korea and Russia.
