Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai Vows Support For Gaza

On Thursday, Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai slammed Israel and reaffirmed her support for Palestinians in Gaza, following criticism in her home country of Pakistan for a Broadway musical she co-produced with former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Some criticize Yousafzai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, for collaborating with Clinton, a vocal backer of Israel’s war against Hamas.

The musical, ‘Suffs’, portrays the American women’s suffrage fight for the right to vote in the 20th century and has been playing in New York since last week.

Malala Yousafzai tweeted, “I want there to be no confusion about my support for the people of Gaza”, through her official ‘X’ handle.

“We do not need to see more dead bodies, bombed schools, and starving children to understand that a ceasefire is urgent and necessary”, she continued in her tweet.

“I have and will continue to condemn the Israeli government for its violations of international law and war crimes”, Yousafzai added.

Since the Gaza war began last October, Pakistan has seen a slew of intensely emotive pro-Palestinian marches.

While Clinton has supported a military campaign to depose Hamas and resisted calls for a ceasefire, she has also expressly advocated for Palestinian civilian safeguards.

Yousafzai has publicly decried civilian casualties and urged a ceasefire in Gaza.

The war began on October 7 with an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel, which claimed the lives of around 1,170 people.

Hamas militants also kidnapped 250 people, with Israel estimating that 129 of them remain in Gaza, including 34 who the military says are dead.

Clinton was America’s top diplomat under former president Barack Obama’s administration, which oversaw a drone strike campaign against Taliban militants in Pakistan and Afghanistan’s borders.

The drone campaign killed and wounded scores of civilians in Yousafzai’s home region.

Yousafzai won the Nobel Peace Prize after being shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban while advocating for girls’ education as a teenager in 2012.

Yousafzai is frequently viewed with distrust in Pakistan, where critics accuse her of imposing a Western feminist and liberal political agenda on the conservative nation.
