Jerusalem, Aug 19 – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are meeting privately at Netanyahu’s office in Jerusalem. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the meeting. An expanded session will follow, including the Strategic Affairs Minister, the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, the Deputy Director of the National Security Council, the Prime Minister’s Military Secretary, the Prime Minister’s Foreign Policy Adviser, the Coordinator for Hostages and the Missing, the US Ambassador to Israel, and the Prime Minister’s Spokesperson.
Blinken is on a three-day visit to Egypt and Israel. He is advancing Washington’s diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and the release of hostages and detainees. The US proposal aims to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, ensure humanitarian aid distribution, and establish regional stability.
Israeli President Addresses Recent Attacks
Earlier, Blinken met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog. This visit marks Blinken’s ninth trip to the region since Hamas’ October 7 attack. Herzog reported ongoing terror attacks by Palestinian terrorists. He also spoke about the murder of Gideon Perry, a 38-year-old father of three, killed by a colleague for being Jewish and Israeli.
Herzog described Israel as surrounded by terror from all directions. He mentioned a suspected major terror attack in Tel Aviv, which is under investigation. Herzog also noted an attack on Israeli soldiers in Ya’ara by Hizballah terrorists using drones, with possible casualties being reviewed.
Blinken Emphasizes Urgency and US Commitment
Blinken called the current moment a “decisive opportunity” to secure the release of hostages and achieve a ceasefire. He stressed the need to finalize the deal and prevent actions that could derail the process or escalate the conflict. Blinken assured that the US has deployed forces to deter and defend against potential attacks from Iran, Hizballah, and other sources.
