Nepal Protests Escalate: Homes Torched, Ministers Resign, Airport Closed

Nepal protests entered their second day on Tuesday with violent scenes across the country.

Demonstrators torched and vandalised the houses of KP Sharma Oli, former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and several ministers. They also defaced and set fire to the party headquarters of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and the Nepali Congress in the Kathmandu Valley.

Local media confirmed reports of torching and vandalism at several government offices nationwide.

Authorities said the situation in Kathmandu has remained tense. Protests intensified in several parts of the valley despite a curfew imposed by local administrations.

The unrest follows the deaths of 19 people in police firing during Gen Z protests on Monday. Enraged citizens have continued to demonstrate against Prime Minister Oli’s government.

Ministers Resign Amid Growing Anger

The ruling coalition has begun to fracture after the loss of lives. At least four ministers have resigned.

Health and Population Minister Pradip Poudel and Youth and Sports Minister Teju Lal Chaudhary joined the Home Minister and Agriculture Minister in stepping down. They expressed regret over the use of force against the Gen Z protestors.

Videos circulating on social media showed Oli’s house in Balakot, Bhaktapur, set ablaze. Protestors also forcefully entered Singh Durbar, the main administrative centre of the government.

Lalitpur’s Chief District Officer Suman Ghimire said protestors had torched Dahal’s residence. He added that crowds were gathering outside homes allocated to other ministers.

Bhaktapur’s Chief District Officer Namaraj Ghimire confirmed the situation remained tense. He stressed that the administration had exercised maximum restraint and had not ordered police to shoot at demonstrators.

Government Offices and Airport Targeted

Local media reported the torching of former Prime Minister Deuba’s house, President Ram Chandra Poudel’s residence, and the home of former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

A video also surfaced showing ministers being airlifted by helicopter from their official residences. Reports suggested Prime Minister Oli was preparing to leave for the United Arab Emirates for medical treatment.

Authorities closed Tribhuvan International Airport after protests near the site created risks for aeroplanes. With violence spreading across districts and the resignation of senior ministers, Nepal protests have plunged the country into deep political turmoil.
