At least 27 people have died, and seven suffered injuries in Nepal after floods, landslides, inundation, strong winds and lightning struck several areas since September 24.
The Prime Minister’s Office said four people remained missing as of Monday evening. Government figures showed that 513 monsoon-related incidents affected 1,065 families during the period.
Rain Disrupts Infrastructure
The disasters destroyed 225 houses and partially damaged another 137. They affected 27 cattle sheds and 114 livestock.
The government has stepped up rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations. Authorities are repairing damaged infrastructure and working to restore normal life.
Floods and landslides damaged 147 locations along highways and major roads. Authorities have repaired and reopened 125 of those locations.
Landslides, road subsidence and damage to bridge approaches have disrupted traffic along the Kaligandaki Corridor in western Nepal.
The affected stretches include Beni-Jomsom, Palpa, Baglung and Nawalparasi districts. Authorities expect repairs to take more than three days.
Flooding has also disrupted electricity supply. The damage affected 1,013.2 megawatts of power transmission through the Kaligandaki, Marsyangdi, and Seti-Madi river corridors.
Around a dozen hydropower projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors suffered severe damage during the deadly August 26 flooding.
The disaster killed more than 1,400 people and left around 5,000 missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
The Nepal Electricity Authority plans to import more than 1,100 MW of electricity from India during the upcoming winter season.
Domestic generation could fall by around 70 per cent as run-of-the-river hydropower projects produce less power.
The NEA expects domestic generation after January to remain around 1,218 MW against projected demand of 2,293 MW.
“That’s why we have planned to import 1,155 MW of electricity from India during the upcoming dry season to manage the power supply,” NEA Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha said Monday.
