Authorities said an alleged thief opened fire outside Mexico City’s main international airport Tuesday during a police chase that injured two cops and temporarily created panic among travelers.
According to the city’s security secretariat, one officer was wounded in the leg and shoulder and another was run over while following a man suspected of stealing goods in the airport’s customs area.
“The 27-year-old driver accelerated towards a passenger terminal of Mexico City International Airport, colliding with several vehicles before he was detained by police”, it explained.
Employees and passengers were seen hiding behind airport counters in images uploaded on social media.
“No passenger or visitor was put at risk during the incident”, said the airport operator.
While drug-related violence is common in Mexico, gunshots in public places are uncommon in the capital, which has an official homicide rate that is significantly below the national average.
