Celebrating a historic milestone in bilateral ties, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu described Maldives–India relations as a bond forged through centuries of shared history, culture and mutual cooperation.
Speaking at a state banquet in honour of visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Muizzu said, “This year marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India — a milestone that reflects not only our shared history but also the depth and resilience of our partnership.”
President Muizzu emphasised that the connection between the two nations predates diplomatic formalities.
“The Indian Ocean has been a witness to our shared journey — as traders, travellers and neighbours — exchanging stories, goods and ideas across these waters. These are ties no tide can break,” he stated, applauding PM Modi for becoming India’s second-longest serving Prime Minister.
President Muizzu expressed his appreciation for India’s steadfast support, noting that the Maldivian government is committed to building an inclusive economy, empowering youth, and maintaining regional security.
“India’s partnership has been instrumental in helping us realise these ambitions,” he noted.
PM Modi Reflects on Symbolic Visit
Prime Minister Modi echoed similar sentiments in his address, calling the relationship ‘centuries-old’ and ‘one of neighbours, partners and true friends’.
He highlighted that the Maldives holds a ‘special place in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy’, built not just on diplomacy, but on ‘deep affinity’.
“It is an honour for me to be the first State Guest of President Muizzu’s tenure and to attend as Guest of Honour on the 60th Independence Day of the Maldives,” Prime Minister Modi said.
PM Modi also spoke of the rich cultural connections, “Our shared heritage is as old as the monsoon and as sweet as Addu Bondi. Our languages and tastes are reflections of a mutual cultural depth — different, yet perfectly harmonious.”
He praised the strength of people-to-people relations, noting, “Your tourist number 10 lakh this year turned out to be an Indian — a symbol of the affection between our people.”
Highlighting areas of collaboration, PM Modi said, “We are colleagues of the Global South. Whether infrastructure or capacity building, India has walked alongside the Maldives. Now, we must move forward in trade, security, and sustainable development.”
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening ties and ensuring continued prosperity and peace in the region.
