The Kuwaiti government will compensate the relatives of the victims of the Mangaf fire that killed 50 people, including 46 Indians, in the southern Ahmadi Governorate with USD 15,000 each.
According to Kuwaiti authorities, the massive fire that broke out on July 12 at a seven-story building in Mangaf was sparked by an electrical short circuit in the guard’s room on the ground floor. The structure housed 196 migrant workers, most of them were Indian.
The martyrs’ relatives would receive USD 15,000 each (Rs 12.5 lakh) as ordered by Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The government sources reported that compensation money would be processed and handed to the victims’ embassies.
Three other people who died were Filipinos, and one of the victims’ identities has yet to be determined. The respective embassies will ensure that the cash is disbursed to the relatives of those affected by the fire, speeding up the process and ensuring that assistance reaches the victims’ families quickly and efficiently.
The Indian government had decided that the families of Indian nationals who died in the big fire would receive compensation of Rs 2 lakh each.
Last Monday, the Kerala government announced that it will pay Rs 5 lakh in financial support to the families of those who died in the fire. 24 Malayalees were among the Indians killed in the catastrophe.
The Kuwaiti public prosecutor has begun an investigation into the incident.
According to the public prosecutor, the investigation will look into the circumstances surrounding the occurrence and what caused the catastrophic fire.
A Kuwaiti and many foreigners have been arrested on charges of homicide and inflicting injuries as a result of inadequate security and safety procedures following the fire.
