The Kremlin declared on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is still open to any contacts to discuss resolving the Ukraine conflict.
The remarks came on the day of an African leader’s visit to Putin to pitch a fresh peace effort, some 16 months after Putin started Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov stated, “President Putin was and is open to any contacts to discuss possible scenarios for solving the Ukrainian problem”.
Russia has always stated that it is open to talks, but that Ukraine must acknowledge the new realities on the ground, where Russian forces control roughly 18% of Ukrainian land.

Last autumn, Moscow declared that it had annexed four districts of easter to have seized four regions in eastern and southern Ukraine as well as the Crimean peninsula, which it had captured in 2014.
Ukraine claims that any peace settlement must be based on its own peace plan, which calls for the withdrawal of Russian forces from all Ukrainian territory.
The African delegation was scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday before meeting Putin in St Petersburg on Saturday.
