US President Joe Biden emphasized Wednesday that an increase in military cooperation with Japan was ‘defensive in nature’, as the two allies both expressed concerns about a rising China.

At a joint news conference during a state visit by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, US US President Joe Biden said, “Our alliance we have with Japan is purely defensive in nature”.

“It’s a defensive alliance. And the things we discussed today improve our cooperation and are purely about defense and readiness”, Biden added.

On Sunday, the United States, Australia, Japan, and the Philippines conducted joint naval and air drills in the disputed South China Sea, as they strengthen ties to confront China’s growing assertiveness in the area.
