January 6 Capitol Riot: Former US Cop Sentenced To More Than 11 Years In Prison

On Thursday in Washington, a retired US police chief was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for his role in the January 6, 2021 assault on the US Capitol.

Alan Hostetter, 59, was found guilty in July of four felonies, including conspiracy to hinder an official procedure and rowdy or disruptive behavior in a restricted building with a lethal or dangerous weapon.

The sentence of 11 years and three months was only somewhat less than the 12.5 years sought by prosecutors.

On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Trump supporters attempted to disrupt the official certification of Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election by attacking the Capitol building, which houses the US Congress.

Hostetter, who was scheduled to begin his term in January, defended himself in federal court in Washington. He never wavered in his view that Biden had stolen the Trump’s election.

According to the Justice Department, more than 1,230 people have been charged for offenses related to the riot. More than 720 of them have been convicted, and more than 450 will be imprisoned.

Trump, who gave an impassioned rally to supporters outside the White House before the riot, has not directly been implicated in the incident.

A congressional commission investigating the events of January 6, proposed criminal charges against Trump, including assisting an insurrection and conspiracy to defraud the United States, in December 2022.

The 77-year-old Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, will stand trial in Washington in March on allegations of plotting to alter the results of Biden’s November 2020 election.

He was charged with racketeering in Georgia after allegedly attempting to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.
