Iran Submits Law To Suspend Cooperation With IAEA Following Constitutional Council Approval

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf formally submitted a law to the administration that suspends the country’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The legislation had earlier received approval from the Constitutional Council, Iran’s top constitutional authority.

The development marks a significant shift in Iran’s approach to international nuclear oversight amid growing regional instability.

Ghalibaf made the announcement via social media platform X, stating that the suspension of cooperation with the IAEA would be implemented henceforth.

Accusations against IAEA

In his statement, Ghalibaf criticised the UN nuclear watchdog, accusing it of acting as a ‘guardian of Israel’s anti-human interests’.

He stated that Iran would not continue cooperating with the IAEA unless it could fully ensure the security of its nuclear sites.

His remarks reflect the Iranian leadership’s growing frustration with perceived Western bias and the international community’s handling of recent military escalations.

ICANA, the official news agency of Iran’s parliament, reported that lawmakers passed the law during an open session on Wednesday.

The bill received overwhelming support, with 221 votes in favour and only one abstention.

With the Constitutional Council’s approval now secured, the law has cleared the final hurdle before governmental implementation.

The suspension follows a series of violent confrontations that have raised concerns over regional security.

The latest round of escalation began on 13 June, when Israel carried out targeted airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, killing several scientists, senior commanders, and civilians.

Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli positions.

Tensions further intensified when the United States launched airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear installations, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, last Saturday.

In response, Iran targeted the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar with missile strikes on Monday.

Ceasefire offers temporary calm

A ceasefire between Iran and Israel took effect on Tuesday, bringing a temporary halt to 12 days of fierce hostilities.

However, the situation remains fragile, with ongoing diplomatic uncertainty and fears of renewed conflict.

The move to suspend cooperation with the IAEA is likely to raise international concerns regarding transparency over Iran’s nuclear activities.

Iran’s decision to halt IAEA cooperation signals a hardening stance in its foreign policy and nuclear posture.

While the ceasefire offers a brief respite, the broader implications of Iran’s legislative action are expected to resonate across global diplomatic and security forums.
