Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described India and Australia as vibrant democracies and leading maritime powers, stating that the Indo-Pacific reflects the shared aspirations of like-minded nations committed to peace, security and prosperity.

Speaking alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese after the third Australia-India Leaders’ Summit in Melbourne, PM Modi said both countries had further strengthened their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

PM Modi thanked Albanese for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He praised Albanese’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors.

India, Australia to connect defence start-ups through Defence Innovation Corridor. New nuclear pact will boost uranium supplies and strengthen clean energy goals.

PM Modi said the Indo-Pacific represented far more than a geographical region. He described it as a symbol of the common aspirations shared by India and Australia.

The Prime Minister added that both nations had signed a joint declaration on security cooperation and adopted a maritime security collaboration roadmap. He said they would also expand cooperation in shipbuilding, ship repair and maintenance.

Highlighting the growing partnership, PM Modi said both countries had agreed to pursue a balanced, ambitious and mutually beneficial Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement. He added that their shared democratic values, multicultural societies and common outlook continued to strengthen mutual trust.

Drawing a cricket analogy, PM Modi described cricket as the diplomatic language connecting India and Australia. He said their meetings remained as focused as a One Day International, decisions as swift as a T20 match and partnership as enduring as a Test match.

The Prime Minister added that the upcoming Olympic and Commonwealth Games would create fresh opportunities for sporting cooperation and investment in sports infrastructure.
