Indian Parliamentary Delegation Concludes Key Brazil Visit Focused On Anti-Terror Cooperation

A high-level Indian Parliamentary delegation, led by Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, completed a significant official visit to Brazil on 2 June 2025.

The delegation’s focus was on enhancing counter-terrorism cooperation and strengthening diplomatic ties as part of India’s broader campaign against cross-border terrorism, especially following the Pahalgam terrorist attack.

The visit, hosted by the Indian Embassy in Brazil, represents a key milestone in India’s diplomatic efforts to build international consensus on combating terrorism.

Following this engagement, the delegation proceeded to the United States for a two-day visit to continue its outreach.

The delegation included members from diverse political parties: Sarfaraz Ahmad (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), GM Harish Balayogi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, and Tejasvi Surya (all Bharatiya Janata Party MPs), as well as former Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

India’s newly appointed Ambassador to Brazil, Dinesh Bhatia, also accompanied the group.

Meetings With Brazilian Leadership

During the visit, the Indian delegation engaged with senior Brazilian officials including Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin, Ambassador Celso Amorim (Chief Adviser to the President), Acting Foreign Minister Maria Laura da Rocha, Senator Nelsinho Trad (President of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee and India-Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group), and Deputy Filipe Barros (Chair of the Chamber of Deputies Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defence).

These discussions centred on India’s steadfast resolve to combat cross-border terrorism, underscored by the tragic Pahalgam attack of 22 April 2025.

The delegation conveyed India’s strong bipartisan stance on terrorism and exchanged views on regional and global security, as well as democratic cooperation.

The visit highlighted the growing India-Brazil strategic partnership.

The Indian Embassy in Brazil expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and fruitful dialogue extended by the Brazilian government and Parliament.

TDP MP GM Harish Balayogi noted in a social media post that Brazilian Vice-President Alckmin fully supported India’s anti-terrorism efforts and expressed condolences for the Pahalgam attack victims.

The meeting also covered potential collaboration on trade, investment, industrial cooperation, and cultural ties such as Ayurveda and Yoga.

The delegation’s visit to Brazil marks a pivotal step towards bolstering international solidarity against terrorism and enhancing bilateral relations.

With the conclusion of the Brazil leg, the delegation proceeded to Washington, DC, to continue advocacy on ‘Operation Sindoor’ and India’s position on Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism.

This diplomatic outreach underscores India’s commitment to fostering global partnerships for peace, security, and mutual growth.
