India on Thursday disbursed the second tranche of 2.5 million US dollars to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), satisfying its annual pledge of 5 million US dollars for the fiscal year 2023-24.

UNRWA, which has been in operation since 1950, provides direct aid and works initiatives to registered Palestinian refugees. It is nearly entirely funded through voluntary donations from UN member nations.
The UN agency is striving to stay operating amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and it appreciated and welcomed India’s generous contribution last month, which came at a difficult moment, particularly in Gaza.
Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing the brunt of the terrible conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007. The Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel prompted Israel to continue bombing the territory to its southwest with air and ground strikes.
India’s assistance is intended to benefit the agency’s core programs and services, such as education, healthcare, relief, and social services for Palestinian refugees.
New Delhi has reiterated its sustained support for the agency’s regional efforts and the assistance it offers to the Palestinian Refugees.
The Indian Government released the first tranche of its annual commitment in November, around a month ago.
On November 19, India transported 32 tonnes of humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine through Egypt’s El-Arish Airport.
Since 2018, India has contributed UNRWA USD 30 million.
