India Leads The Effort To Create A BRICS Expansion Consensus

India took the initiative to establish a consensus on the selection of new BRICS members.

During the leaders’ retreat on Tuesday, they said, “Significant progress was made in the expansion of BRICS”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined his peers from China, South Africa, and Brazil for the Leaders’ Retreat.

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, is not attending the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) conference in Johannesburg this year.

They claimed that India’s actions were motivated by the goal of adding New Delhi’s strategic allies as new members.

The expansion of BRICS is the main emphasis of the grouping’s annual conference.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said on Monday that numerous countries have expressed strong interest in joining the grouping.

Twenty-three nations have applied to join the BRICS, with Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Argentina emerging as strong competitors for membership, he said during a press conference in New Delhi ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Johannesburg.
