Heavy rain-caused landslides killed at least one person, and blocked a major highway in Nepal this week, officials said on Tuesday, bringing the total number of deaths from the annual monsoon rains to 40.
Every year, the rains that pound the Himalayan nation from June to September kill dozens of people, and many more go missing as the monsoon causes landslides and floods.
According to Mana Acharya, a home ministry official, 38 individuals have died and at least 33 people are missing this year.
“Rescue teams are also looking for another 6 individuals who have gone missing after a landslide destroyed their home in a village near Kathmandu”, she added.
The authorities stated that landslides have also closed a vital highway connecting the capital with the southern plains.
Rains have also forced the Bagmati River in the Kathmandu Valley to overflow its banks, flooding areas of the four million-people-strong province.
People trying to bail floodwaters out of their homes were shown on television. Residents near the eastern Sindhuli River have also been advised to evacuate as the flood level increases.
