Greece Expands Diplomatic Ties With India By Opening New Consulates

The Greek government has announced plans to open two new consulates in India, specifically in the vibrant cities of Mumbai and Bengaluru.

This decision was relayed by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a recent phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Currently, Greece operates three diplomatic missions in India:

  • An embassy in New Delhi, and
  • Consulates in Chennai and Kolkata

The establishment of new consulates aims to enhance Greece’s diplomatic presence and foster stronger engagement with one of its key partners in the region.

This initiative is part of a wider effort to strengthen India-Greece relations, which have gained momentum since the formalization of a strategic partnership during PM Modi’s visit to Athens in August 2023.

The discussions between the two leaders underscored the importance of collaboration across various sectors, including trade, defense, shipping, and connectivity.

The leaders also addressed Greece’s upcoming role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, which is likely to create new avenues for joint efforts on global challenges.

Productive Call With PM Mitsotakis To Strengthen India-Greece Partnership: PM Modi

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Yesterday, had a productive conversation with PM @kmitsotakis, reaffirming our shared commitment to strengthening the India-Greece Strategic Partnership. Together, we aim to deepen our collaboration across trade, defence, shipping and connectivity. Greece is a valued partner for India within the EU as well.”

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) noted that the leaders reviewed the progress of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a vital initiative aimed at boosting connectivity through strategic economic corridors.

They also exchanged perspectives on various regional and global matters, with a focus on developments in West Asia.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mitsotakis visited India as the chief guest at the prestigious Raisina Dialogue, where he emphasized the importance of maritime connectivity and corridor partnerships.

His visit set the stage for future collaborations and underscored the significance of the IMEC in fortifying India-Greece relations.

With the addition of the new consulates, Greece is likely to further enhance its diplomatic engagement and economic ties with India, a move anticipated to accelerate cooperation and foster closer bilateral relations between the two nations.
