Professor Mahtab Alam Rizvi, recently appointed as the Officiating Registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia, has set a clear vision for the university, placing discipline and a culture of academic excellence at the forefront.
Prof Rizvi emphasized his commitment to fostering an environment that aligns with Jamia’s national and international reputation, with active collaboration among university stakeholders as a key pillar of his approach.
With over two decades of experience in academia, research, and administration, Prof Rizvi is widely recognized for his expertise in international relations, foreign policy, and security studies, particularly regarding India’s strategic relations with West Asia and North Africa.
Prior to this appointment, he served as the Honorary Director of Jamia’s Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, earning acclaim for his dynamic leadership and extensive research on security issues, energy policy, and conflict resolution in the Middle East and North Africa.
During a recent media interaction, Prof Rizvi underscored his commitment to ‘action over words’ and expressed confidence that positive developments in discipline and academic standards at Jamia would soon be apparent.
He stated, “Our goal is to build an environment that reflects Jamia’s long-standing values of excellence.”
The university has also recently welcomed Professor Mazhar Asif as its new Vice-Chancellor, following a lengthy wait for a permanent appointment.
Since assuming office on 25 October, Prof Asif’s leadership has invigorated the university, bringing renewed optimism to students, faculty, and staff who were eager for a new direction.
Prof Asif’s first decision to appoint Prof Rizvi as the Officiating Registrar received widespread approval.
Traditionally, civil service officials have held the role of Registrar at Jamia, a structure that sometimes created gaps in cohesion within the university’s academic environment.
However, with Prof Rizvi’s academic background and administrative experience, this decision promises to align Jamia’s academic and administrative functions more seamlessly.
The appointment of Prof Rizvi has garnered praise from the academic community.
Prof Reeta Sinha of IGNOU commented that having a Registrar from an academic background rather than an administrative service background is likely to foster stronger collaboration and a smoother work environment at Jamia.
“This decision aligns the administrative approach with the ethos of an academic institution, reducing potential conflicts and enhancing productivity,” she noted.
Both the academic and non-academic staff at Jamia have warmly welcomed the appointments of Vice-Chancellor Prof Asif and Registrar Prof Rizvi, expressing their support and commitment to advancing the university’s mission.
The university community has pledged to work collectively under their guidance, with a shared focus on strengthening Jamia’s academic and administrative framework.
With this renewed leadership, Jamia Millia Islamia is likely on a path of growth, dedicated to upholding the university’s legacy of excellence and shaping an environment that reflects its prestigious standing in India and beyond.
