The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is intensifying its investigation into financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, uncovering evidence that implicates former principal Sandip Ghosh in a controversial MBBS selection process.
Sources indicate that CBI officials have detailed their findings in reports submitted to the Calcutta High Court last month, just before the court’s break for the Durga Puja festivities.
According to the CBI’s investigation, significant irregularities in the MBBS admissions took place in 2021, with Ghosh playing a pivotal role in the process.
The investigation initiated following a whistleblower’s revelation, specifically from Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar.
His petition prompted a single-judge bench at the Calcutta High Court to order a comprehensive CBI inquiry into the financial dealings associated with the case.
In their recent submissions, the CBI presented supporting evidence that includes call logs and voice messages, suggesting Ghosh’s direct involvement in the alleged misconduct surrounding the MBBS selection.
Moreover, investigators have also identified similar irregularities concerning the selection of house staff, raising further concerns about administrative practices within the college.
One notable instance highlighted by the investigation is the arrest of Ashish Pandey, a close associate of Ghosh, who the authorities have implicated in the financial irregularities and who is currently in judicial custody.
In addition to the CBI’s actions, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has independently entered the fray, launching its investigation into the financial irregularities after filing an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR).
The allegations against the college administration are serious, encompassing misappropriations related to the tendering process, contracts for infrastructure work that bypassed the state Public Works Department, and even more disturbing claims involving the smuggling of biomedical waste and the illegal sale of organs from unidentified bodies in the hospital morgue.
The CBI is also conducting a parallel investigation into Ghosh regarding the tragic case of a junior doctor who was raped and murdered within the hospital premises in August of this year, further complicating the legal landscape surrounding this case.
