On Saturday, security forces in Anantnag district, Jammu & Kashmir, engaged and eliminated two unidentified terrorists in the Larnoo forest area.
This incident comes as tensions escalate in the region, particularly with ongoing clashes in the downtown Srinagar area, where terrorists remain holed up and exchanges of gunfire persist.
Officials have yet to confirm the identities, as authorities focus on concluding the operation in the area.
“We will ascertain the identities once the situation stabilizes,” they stated.
In Srinagar, the encounter began following intelligence reports indicating terrorist activity in the Khanyar neighborhood.
As security personnel conducted a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO), they encountered gunfire from the terrorists, sparking a fierce gun battle that continues to unfold in the heart of the city—a location that had not seen such confrontations for over a decade.
This resurgence of violence in Srinagar’s old downtown, once a stronghold of separatist sentiment, is a stark reminder of the area’s turbulent past.
Over the years, security forces had made substantial progress in curbing militant activity, leading to a belief that these historic neighborhoods were largely free from such threats.
Escalating Violence Raises Concerns Over Terrorist Presence
The recent skirmish has raised new concerns about the presence of terrorists within the city. The unrest follows a disturbing trend of violence in the region.
Just a day prior, terrorists shot and injured two non-local laborers from Uttar Pradesh in the Mazhama village of Budgam district.
Fortunately, medical reports indicate that the laborers are in stable condition after receiving prompt treatment at a local hospital.
The escalating violence in the Kashmir Valley has been alarming, with recent attacks claiming the lives of multiple workers.
Last month, seven unarmed laborers working on an infrastructure project were killed in Gagangir, Ganderbal district.
This assault, which targeted six non-local workers and a local doctor, highlighted the ongoing dangers faced by civilians in the area.
In a related incident, three army personnel and two porters lost their lives in an ambush in the Botapathri region of Gulmarg, further underlining the persistent threat posed by terrorists in the region.
As the situation develops, security forces remain vigilant in their efforts to restore peace and stability, while residents grapple with the resurgence of violence that has disrupted their lives.
