Global Leaders Respond To Biden’s Decision Not To Seek Re-election

In response to US President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not seek re-election, leaders from around the world have expressed a range of reactions and reflections on his tenure, according to media reports.

US allies largely paid tribute to Biden’s decades of government service, with a focus on his role in international security partnerships, as reported by The Guardian. However, they refrained from delving into the ongoing domestic political dynamics in the US.

The upcoming US election campaign coincides with significant global challenges, including conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, concerns over great-power rivalry involving China, and European allies’ anxieties about potential shifts in US foreign policy, possibly reverting to an “America First” approach under former President Donald Trump.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk tweeted directly to Biden, acknowledging his difficult decisions that have contributed to global security and strengthened democracy. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer respected Biden’s decision, emphasizing their continued collaboration until the end of his presidency.

NATO’s strength

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described Biden as a close friend who has bolstered transatlantic ties and NATO’s strength. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed gratitude for Biden’s steadfast support during Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia.

In Israel, while tensions have marked Biden’s tenure, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant thanked him for unwavering support.

Conversely, critics including Russian officials blamed Biden for exacerbating global tensions, accusing him of mishandling international affairs and US domestic issues.

As global reactions unfold, leaders such as Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala have opted to remain neutral, praising Biden’s statesmanship while expressing hope for a robust democratic contest in the upcoming US presidential election.

The decision by Biden, a seasoned politician with a long-standing career, has prompted reflections on his legacy both domestically and internationally, underscoring the impact of US leadership transitions on the global stage.
