Germany: 3 Russian Military Aircraft Intercepted Over Baltic Sea

Germany handed over responsibility for NATO’s Baltic air policing mission to the United Kingdom

Germany’s Luftwaffe said that three Russian military aircraft flying without transponder signals have been intercepted in international airspace over the Baltic Sea on Wednesday.

Team Luftwaffe tweeted, “Reconnaissance aircraft intercepted. 🇬🇧 and 🇬🇧 #Eurofighter have been alerted to identify 3 military machines. The two SU-27 flankers and one IL-20 from 🇷🇺 flew again without a transponder signal in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. #SecuringTheSkies #VAPB @NATO @GermanyNATO @NATO_AIRCOM”, through its official Twitter handle.

It published multiple photos of the Russian aircraft mid-flight. Two Sukhoi Su-27 fighter planes and one Ilyushin ll-20 plane were identified by the German and British forces.

Russian military aircraft regularly fly from Russia’s mainland to Kaliningrad and return, implying that such encounters are rather common in the region.

Germany handed over responsibility for NATO’s Baltic air policing mission to the United Kingdom earlier this month.

Because Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia do not have their own fighter jets, NATO allies pitch in to protect the air space there.
