The International Committee of the Red Cross stated that a humanitarian convoy delivering life-saving medical supplies was attacked in Gaza City on Tuesday.
An ICRC statement stated the convoy of five trucks and two Red Cross vehicles was bringing supplies to health institutions, including Al-Quds Hospital, when it was hit, adding that two trucks were damaged and a driver was mildly injured.
The ICRC did not say who fired on its convoy or where the shots came from.
“These are not the conditions under which humanitarian personnel can work”, stated William Schomburg, head of the ICRC sub-delegation in Gaza.
“We’ve come to provide immediate assistance to civilians in need. It is a legal obligation under international humanitarian law to ensure that crucial relief reaches medical facilities”, Schomburg added.
“After the gunfire, the convoy altered its route and reached Al-Shifa Hospital where it delivered the medical supplies”, the ICRC stated.
“Later the ICRC convoy accompanied six ambulances with critically wounded patients to the Rafah crossing to Egypt”, according to the statement.
