Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented specially curated Indian artefacts and paintings to the leaders of Finland, Denmark and Iceland during his recent visit to the Nordic region, highlighting India’s rich artistic heritage, traditional craftsmanship and cultural diplomacy.

For Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, Prime Minister Modi presented a replica of the iconic ice axe used by legendary mountaineer Tenzing Norgay during the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside Sir Edmund Hillary.

Crafted in steel with a polished wooden shaft, the replica symbolised endurance, courage and the spirit of exploration associated with Himalayan mountaineering traditions.

Officials said the gift also reflected Iceland’s close cultural connection with glaciers, rugged landscapes and adventure exploration.

Prime Minister Modi gifted Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen a traditional Bidri Silver Work Vase, representing one of India’s finest metalcraft traditions from the Deccan region.

Known for its intricate silver inlay work and elegant floral and geometric patterns, Bidri craftsmanship reflects generations of artistic precision and skilled workmanship.

Officials noted that the vase resonated strongly with Denmark’s appreciation for minimalism, refined design and handcrafted artistry.

For Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Prime Minister Modi presented a Kamal Talai Pichwai painting from Rajasthan’s Nathdwara tradition.

The artwork featured serene lotus-filled waters symbolising purity, harmony and spiritual reflection.

Officials said the painting also shared a symbolic connection with Finland, widely known as the ‘Land of a Thousand Lakes’, where nature, water and tranquillity hold deep cultural importance.

The gifts reflected India’s rich cultural diversity and traditional craftsmanship while strengthening cultural ties between India and the Nordic countries.

Officials said the exchange also highlighted shared values of sustainability, artistic expression, nature appreciation and heritage preservation.
