Shahid Khaqan Abbasi
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi founded a new political party named Awaam Pakistan on Friday after leaving the ruling PML-N over differences with the party’s policy.
Abbasi, who was prime minister from August 2017 to May 2018, was joined by former finance minister Miftah Ismail, who also left the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which is led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
The new political entity’s slogan is ‘badlien gaen nizam’ (We will transform the system). The party will be formally launched on July 6 or 7.
A video posted on Awaam Pakistan’s official X handle showed despondent residents discussing national issues such as inflation, electricity shortages, corruption, unemployment, and educational discrepancies.
Abbasi, 65, has been nominated as the leader of the organizing committee, with Ismail serving as his deputy.
The organizing committee also comprises former Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa governor and PML-N politician Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, former PML-N Senator Javed Abbasi, and former Muttahida Qaumi Movement lawmaker Sheikh Salahuddin.
Former PML-N lawmaker Rana Zahid Tauseef of Faisalabad, former PTI health minister Zafar Mirza, former PML-N provincial lawmaker Zaeem Qadri, Hazara region activist Fatima Atif, Sindhi nationalist leader Anwar Soomro, legal expert Moiz Jaferi, and educationist Tariq Banuri are among the founding members.
Abbasi was prime minister from August 2017 to May 2018, when PML-N chairman Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court.
