Former Israeli Intel Chief Hopes For ‘Modi Miracle’ In Brokering Peace With Hamas Through India

Four days into the bloodiest Israel-Hamas conflict in decades, with more than 1,600 people killed and over 6,000 injured, there is still no sign of peace or a ceasefire. Amid discussions that India, known for its diplomatic efforts in the past, could play a crucial role, the former head of Israel’s military intelligence, Major General Amos Yadlin (retd), expressed hope for a “Modi miracle.”

Major General Yadlin stated that Hamas is unwilling to negotiate for peace and likened the organization to a terror group like ISIS due to their brutal tactics. He emphasized that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi could facilitate a breakthrough, Israel would welcome it.

He pointed out the historical and strategic similarities between India and Israel, both nations having gained independence around the same time and facing security challenges at their borders. He acknowledged the significant defense cooperation between the two countries and expressed readiness for India to mediate in the conflict.

Regarding the intelligence failures in predicting and preventing Hamas attacks, Major General Yadlin cited operational shortcomings and the adaptability of Hamas tactics to evade surveillance.

The interview took place as Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu updated Prime Minister Modi on the military situation in Israel, with Modi assuring India’s support during this challenging time.

Hamas had recently threatened Tel Aviv with hostage executions in response to Israel’s declaration of a “complete siege” on the Gaza Strip, where reports suggest they are holding nearly 150 hostages, including children, with casualties already reported.
