China said on Tuesday that it has supported India’s hosting of this year’s G20 Summit and that it is ready to work with all parties to ensure the success of the high-profile global meeting this week in New Delhi.
A day after the Chinese foreign ministry announced that Premier Li Qiang will represent China at the G20 Summit instead of President Xi Jinping, a spokesperson for the ministry told the media that China always places a high on G20 grouping and actively participates in relevant activities.
“We support India in hosting this year’s summit and stand ready to work with all parties to make the G20 Summit a success”, she stated.
According to her, the G20 is the primary forum for international economic cooperation.
Without mentioning the boundary dispute, the spokeswoman stated that China-India relations have been generally stable, with our two sides maintaining dialogue and communication at various levels.
“The continued improvement and growth of China-India relations serves the common interests of the two countries and two peoples. We stand ready to work with India to further improve and advance bilateral relations”, she continued.
Since the tragic fighting in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley in June 2020, India-China relations have been severely strained.
Even though the two sides concluded disengagement from various locations following prolonged diplomatic and military talks, Indian and Chinese troops have been locked in an over three-year conflict in specific friction points in eastern Ladakh.
India has constantly maintained that peace and serenity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) were critical to normalizing overall relations.
Premier Li will represent China at the ASEAN Summit in Indonesia, which will take place from September 5 to 8. After attending the East Asia summit in Jakarta, he will proceed to India.
Among the G20 leaders who have already confirmed their attendance are US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The G20 member countries account for around 85 percent of the global GDP, more than 75 percent of the global commerce, and almost two-thirds of the world population.
Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union compose the group.
