Following the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza war, Iran warned of the threat of an uncontrollable explosion in the Middle East scenario.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Islamic Republic’s top diplomat, also called for the quick opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
According to Israeli officials, militants from the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas conducted an unprecedented onslaught on southern Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people, and taking approximately 240 hostages.
In response, Israel, whose main backer is the United States, promised to destroy Hamas and launched an onslaught that has killed more than 17,400 Palestinians, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza.
The US rejected a Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Friday, claiming that the resolution would leave Hamas in place able to repeat what it did on October 7.
“As long as America supports the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the continuation of the war… there is a possibility of an uncontrollable explosion in the situation of the region”, Amir-Abdollahian told UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres over the phone.
The Iranian foreign minister applauded the UN Secretary-General’s move to use UN Charter Article 99 as a brave action to maintain international peace and security.
On December 1, Israel and Hamas resumed fighting after a one-week truce that Israel claims Hamas violated.
“The Israeli regime’s claim that Hamas has violated the ceasefire is completely false”, Amir-Abdollahian told Guterres, adding that US support for Israel has made achieving a permanent ceasefire difficult.
