Firefighters stated on Sunday, a pilot successfully made a water landing of his tourist plane in rough seas off the coast of southern France when the engine failed. All of the passengers were safe.

The Cessna 177 landed 600 metres (1,968 feet) off the shore of Frejus, a Mediterranean resort, shortly before 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT).

According to the local fire department, the pilot chose the spot to avoid the beach, where there were already a lot of holidaymakers.

“To pull that off, you need a lot of technical ability and a little bit of luck”, the spokesperson said.

Two women and one male were rescued by firefighters and fled uninjured although scared.

The plane sank, but no pollution has been found in the sea so far.
