Residents said on Monday that Islamist militants had attacked at least 10 farmers’ crops in Borno, in northern Nigeria.
Last week, terrorists attacked two villages in Borno state, a hotbed for insurgency and the epicentre of a more than a decade-long insurgency in Nigeria that has spread to the neighboring Chad and Cameroon, killing at least 25 people and injuring many more.
Farmers in Kawuri village, Konduga local government area, Borno State, were attacked by men riding motorbikes and armed with rifles on Monday at 8:00 am (0730 GMT), according to Abubakar Masta, a farmer who managed to flee.
“I saw 10 corpses of my friends who were slaughtered”, Abubakar claimed, as security officials recovered the bodies.
Residents reported the attack was carried out by the alleged Islamist group Boko Haram.
Borno state is also home to the Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP), a regional affiliate of the Islamic State.
Residents claim that militants have been killing farmers and disrupting farming villages, potentially raising food costs in a country already dealing with double-digit inflation.
A police official did not immediately respond to requests for confirmation of farmers’ deaths.
Alkali Mommodu, a resident, said he assisted the military in their response and recovered 10 bodies.
