India expressed “deep concern” on Tuesday over the arrest and denial of bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a Hindu priest and ISKCON leader in Bangladesh. Police detained Das, who also speaks for the Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Mancha, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday.
A Chittagong court rejected Das’s bail plea on Tuesday and sent him to jail. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the incident, raising concerns about the safety of Hindus.
Rising Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh
The MEA highlighted a pattern of violence targeting minorities in Bangladesh. “Hindus face frequent attacks, including arson, vandalism, and desecration of temples,” it stated.
The MEA criticized the arrest of a peaceful religious leader while attackers remain unpunished. It urged Bangladesh to protect minority rights and ensure freedom of assembly and expression.
Protests Erupt and ISKCON Responds
News of the arrest sparked protests across Chittagong and other areas. Videos showed police using force on peaceful demonstrators demanding Das’s release. Several protestors reportedly sustained injuries.
ISKCON called the allegations against Das baseless and urged India to intervene. “We request Bangladesh to release Chinmoy Krishna Das immediately,” the organization stated.
Incidents of violence against Hindus have increased under Bangladesh’s interim government. Despite promises of harmony, minorities face growing threats, sparking fear and uncertainty.
