EAM Jaishankar Meets Russian President Putin In Moscow; Pushes For Stronger Bilateral Ties

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar called on Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday.

The meeting also included Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, and Indian Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar, according to a statement from the Kremlin.

Talks with Lavrov on Global and Regional Issues

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar held detailed discussions with Foreign Minister Lavrov. Both leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral ties, including trade, investment, defence, fertilisers, energy, health, skilling, and people-to-people exchanges.

Taking to X, Jaishankar posted, “Pleased to meet FM Sergey Lavrov today in Moscow. Had a detailed discussion on our bilateral ties, including trade, investment, energy, fertilizers, health, skilling & mobility, defense, and people to people exchanges. We exchanged views on Ukraine, Europe, Iran, West Asia, Afghanistan and the Indian sub-continent. Also spoke about our cooperation in UN, G20, SCO and BRICS. Our meeting helped prepare the outcomes and decisions for the Annual Summit later this year.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the two sides stressed the importance of strengthening the multipolar architecture of international relations and supporting Global South nations in protecting their sovereignty.

Both sides also discussed expanding political contacts, building sustainable trade, transport, and financial channels, and boosting cooperation in nuclear energy and hydrocarbons.

Welcoming Jaishankar, Lavrov highlighted the strategic depth of India-Russia ties.

He stated, “We regard each other as privileged strategic partners. In today’s international environment, interaction in multilateral platforms like the SCO, BRICS, G20, and the UN has special importance. Russia remains committed to a balanced multipolar world order.”

Jaishankar Eyes Outcome-Oriented Modi-Putin Summit

EAM Jaishankar expressed confidence that his talks with Lavrov and other Russian leaders would make the upcoming Modi-Putin Annual Summit ‘fruitful and outcome-oriented’.

He added, “We had a very productive meeting with Denis Manturov at the Inter-Governmental Commission. Today’s meeting allows us to build on those discussions and ensure maximum deliverables for the summit later this year.”
