US President Donald Trump has left open the possibility of declaring a national security emergency to introduce voter identification and proof-of-citizenship requirements ahead of the US midterm elections, saying, “Stranger things have happened.”
Trump made the remarks during an interview with Wayne Allyn Root on Real America’s Voice after Root urged him to use emergency powers if the Senate failed to pass the SAVE America Act.
The proposed legislation seeks to require photo identification and proof of citizenship for federal voter registration and place restrictions on mail-in voting.
Trump did not explicitly endorse declaring an emergency but repeatedly called on the Senate to act on the election measures. He said voters expected the SAVE America Act to be passed and stressed that ‘you got to have voter identification’ and ‘proof of citizenship’.
The President criticised Republican senators who he said were opposing the legislation and praised House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Trump claimed the House had passed the legislation five times before it stalled in the Senate. He also renewed his criticism of mail-in voting, alleging without providing evidence that the system was vulnerable to fraud.
Trump singled out California, calling its elections among the most corrupt in the country and claiming that some Republican voters had faced difficulties obtaining ballots.
Root urged Trump to declare a national security emergency if the bill failed in the Senate. Trump kept the option open but did not commit to it.
The debate reflects a wider Republican push for citizenship proof and voter ID, while opponents warn the rules could restrict eligible voters.
Federal law already bars non-citizens from voting in federal elections.
