Legendary West Indies cricketer Clive Lloyd expressed his appreciation after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in on Thursday.
Lloyd, who captained the West Indies to two World Cup victories, praised PM Modi’s dedication to promoting cricket and called for more leaders with a similar commitment to the sport.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Connecting over cricket! A delightful interaction with leading cricket players of Guyana. The sport has brought our nations closer and deepened our cultural linkages.”

A Special Moment For Cricket Legends
Clive Lloyd, who played 110 Tests for the West Indies between 1966 and 1985, shared the significance of the meeting, particularly highlighting the announcement that 11 Guyanese cricketers would undergo training in India.
He expressed gratitude for India’s initiative and praised PM Modi’s support for the development of cricket worldwide.
Lloyd stated, “We had a good discussion. I think 11 of our players will now be training in India. So, it has been a very good decision by them. We are thankful to them for that. He is interested in cricket and that is very good. He is doing things to help to boost cricket. So, we would like more Prime Ministers like him.”
Alvin Kallicharran Impressed By PM Modi’s Cricket Knowledge
Former West Indies allrounder Alvin Kallicharran, who was also present at the meeting, was taken aback by PM Modi’s depth of knowledge about cricket.
“Everybody in India knows cricket. But his knowledge is special because he knows when we went to India. He knows us by our first name. To meet the Prime Minister today personally is magic. The connection is tremendous. The kind of help to work with our young cricketers is very kind of the Prime Minister and India,” Kallicharran remarked.
PM Modi’s Visit To Guyana
PM Modi arrived in Guyana, marking the third stop of his three-nation tour.
This visit is significant as it is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in over 50 years.
During his trip, PM Modi also participated in the second India-CARICOM Summit alongside leaders from Caribbean partner countries.
